GUKPT Sheffield & Dundee Summer Series Roundup

GUKPT Luton And Aberdeen Summer SeriesThe third round of Grosvenor UK Poker Tour Summer Series festivals have now been completed.

The penultimate pair of GUKPT Summer Series festivals ran in tandem this week with action taking place in both Sheffield and Dundee's G Casinos. Sheffield hosted four side events leading up to the £500 Main Event, while Dundee ran three around its own £300 tournament.

Side event action in Dundee kicked off on the 23rd of July with a two-day £200 NL Hold'em freezeout where Paul Watson took the top spot and £2,000 after beating 25 competitors. The following day saw the field size double as Calum Menzies won the £150 NL Hold'em freezeout event, while John Durkin sneaked into the money in 6th spot to make back-to-back Summer Series final tables.

The £300 Main Event saw 41 competitors play through the deepstacked tournament, with Norman Levitt capturing the first prize of £4,310 and the top GUKPT ranking points award of the Dundee Series. Runner up Alisdair Macrae went on to run up twice in a row, finishing 2nd in the £100 NL Hold'em Bounty Freezeout which wrapped up the Scottish festival the following day, while Paul Watson took the top spot and £975. The others to finish in the money in the Main Event were Hamid Montaghian (3rd), John Chang, Jose Chatillon and Ian Young.

Sheffield got a one-day head start on Dundee, opening its Series with a £150 NL Hold'em freezeout which was won by Richard Trigg, who a few years previously had come third in a £1,000 GUKPT Main Event and cashed in a smattering more along the way. He also cashed in the following £250 NL freezeout, which was won by Gregory Hunt. The £100 Pot Limit Omaha (1 Rebuy or Add-on) gave Masaud Hussain the victory, while Michael Davies outlasted 47 competitors in the final £100 NL Hold'em Bounty Freezeout, winning £1,250 and an as yet unconfirmed number of player scalps (minimum one, of course, for beating Patrick Donoghue heads up).

Sheffield's £500 two-day Main Event kept 56 players out of the summer sun as the field dropped to a final table of ten on Saturday night, losing a small but tough batch of players along the way including young guns like Simon Mairs and James Keys, Newcastle Summer Series Main Event winner Hugh Frew and current GUKPT rankings leader Ali Mallu. The survivors recommenced the following day knowing that only seven would reach the prize money, and this crucial point was reached fairly swiftly with Gavin Hall exiting first (ending his final table streak) followed by Andrew Brennan, who'd started the day second in chips but ran Queens into Aces for a prompt trip to the rail. The pure bubble wooden spoon (figurative) went to Faizal Khan who was eliminated by surprise comebacker Tim Flanders, who'd arrived with the short stack but rocketed up the leaderboard to put himself back in contention early.

Meanwhile leader at the start of Day Two David Burn didn't pick up the momentum he needed to secure a victory, finishing in 5th place as Luke Fields picked up the pace knocking out two competitors in quick succession. Glen Storey had previously hit the rail in 7th, followed by Andrew Brennan, Burn and Mohammed Younus, and then yet another player, John Exley, succumbed to Fields leaving him heads up against the success story of the day Tim Flanders. The GUKPT regular and tournament veteran couldn't take the momentum from Fields, however, who took home the £9,250 top prize and the seat in the Champion of Champions event in Coventry.

The final Summer Series events start August 23rd in London and Manchester, but the next leg of the GUKPT will be in Luton at the G Casino with no fewer than 10 side events surrounding the £1,000 Main Event which begins on August 12th.
