Retired accountant John Angus from Edinburgh has won the Grosvenor UK Poker Tour Summer Series at the G casino in Aberdeen. He defeated deep-sea fisherman Pete Thomas from Orkney in a quick fire heads up encounter. In the final hand Angus had pocket sixes against Thomas’s A-8. The board of 3-K-5-3-6 gave Angus a boat to sink the fisherman and ship the title to Edinburgh. Poker journalist Nick Wright had been the chip leader going into the final, but was eliminated in third place by the eventual winner. Local player and online pro Martin Sutcliffe finished fourth, while Graham Doherty was the last player to make the money, taking fifth. Doherty was also declared the player of the series, as he cashed in all three events at the festival. Also making the final, but missing out on a cash finish were Germany’s Stefan Bormann, former professional footballer Alex Notman, Northern Ireland’s Ross Parkhill and Lennart Hansson from Sweden.

It was the first GUKPT event to take place in Scotland and although it was the smallest event on the tour in terms of numbers, it was conducted in good spirit. Just 42 players contested the main event, 44 took part in the £300 freezeout, while 79 sat down for the festival opening £200 freezeout. The GUKPT Summer Series continues on June 25th at the Grosvenor casino in Walsall.
